Society of Indiana Archivists’

2015 Fall Workshop

"Nuts and Bolts: e-Records & Digital Preservation"

When: Friday, October 23, 2015

Time:  9:00am – 4:30pm

Where: Schwartz Digital Complex at Ball State University's Bracken Library (Muncie, Indiana)

Cost: $25 for students, $35 for members, $55 for non-members (includes snacks and beverages)

Registration closes on Friday, October 16. On-site registration will not be available for this workshop.

About the Workshop:

Building on the Library of Congress's Digital Preservation Outreach Education (DPOE), this workshop will teach you how to successfully prepare for a digital collection project at your shop. In particular, it will explore the need and process for inventorying digital holdings you have or will have, the requirements for systems to help manage those digital records, the process of choosing suitable systems, and some implementation considerations. This will be a partly interactive event, and participants will join in exercises of estimations, debating options and justifying decisions against the three following contexts:

  • Case 1: Small Archive or Special Collection within a Library
  • Case 2: Medium Archive or Collection of a Historical Society, Museum or Corporation
  • Case 3: Large Archive or Collection within a University

Participants will work in homogeneous groups to discuss and come up with answers together.

About the Facilitator:

Tibaut Houzanme is the Electronic Records Archivist at the Indiana Archives and Records Administration. He manages the digital accessions and advises the IARA Director and State Archivist on electronic records projects, issues, implementations. He is interested in the full life-cycle management of digital records in particular, and in technology aspects of the management of all archives in general.

Participants of the workshop can earn both LEUs and ACA Recertification Credits for attending.

(Note: ACA recertification credits should be placed in Section B.3.c of ACA's recertification form)

DIRECTIONS AND PARKING

Paid parking is available on campus. Directions and parking information on the library’s website is at http://cms.bsu.edu/academics/libraries/about/map.

The best place to park for the workshop will be in the Emens parking garage - the garage closest to the library. Visitor parking is on the top level of the garage, and payments can be made ($1 per hour) at machines located in the stairwells of the garage. Make note of your stall number – you will need this to make your payment.

BSU’s very handy visitor parking map can be found at http://cms.bsu.edu/-/media/WWW/Files/Map/visitormap.pdf.

The McKinley Avenue parking garage or the Neely Avenue “R5” parking lots will also be available, but located further from the library. If you would like to park in the R5 parking lot, you should stop by the Office of Parking Services to purchase a pass for $5 first. Mention you are attending a workshop in Bracken Library and would like to park in R5; they will be able to direct you to that parking lot. The R5 lot is located near the Architecture and Whitinger Business Buildings, #41 and 51 on the visitor parking map. The McKinley garage is marked #37 on the map.

BSU’s Office of Parking Services is located at the L.A. Pittenger Student Center, Room L-1, marked #18 on the map. They will be open 7:30am to 5:00pm on Friday, October 23. They can be contact by phone at (765) 285-1208 and email at parking@bsu.edu. (http://tinyurl.com/BallStateParking)
