This virtual workshop will offer an introduction to descriptive metadata for digital special collections. We will explore the purpose of metadata, some common metadata schemas and standards, and frequently-used metadata elements for item-level description. The focus will be on practical advice for creating high-quality metadata records. The workshop will include hands-on practice with creating metadata; participants are encouraged to bring an item from their own collections to describe.

About the instructor

Elliot Williams has over 8 years of experience as a metadata librarian. He is currently the Metadata Strategist at the University of Texas at San Antonio, where he focuses on metadata quality and interoperability. Elliot previously worked as the DPLA Aggregation Service Coordinator at Texas Digital Library and metadata librarian at the University of Miami and has experience with cataloging and metadata in a variety of systems and schemas. He teaches an introductory metadata class for Library Juice Academy and presents regularly shareable and inclusive metadata practices.

The 2023 Spring Workshop is free for students registered for the 2023 Annual Meeting. Everyone interested in attending this workshop must register by the due date using the registration link below:

Important Reminders

  • Registration will close on March 22, 2023
  • All payment due prior to the March 28 workshop
  • Cancellations with refund must be made by emailing Denise Rayman
    at dense.rayman[at]gmail[dot]com by Monday, March 27, 2023
  • If you are not currently a member, or your membership has lapsed, you must sign up for membership first in order to register with the member rate. [Note: membership is by calendar year]. 
  • If paying with check: After completing the membership form, send an email to Denise Rayman (dense.rayman[at]gmail[dot]com) with the subject line “member application started, please confirm membership” and wait for a confirmation email. Once you receive a confirmation, you can register for the meeting at the member price. You can pay for both with one check. 
  • Virtual meeting information will be emailed to registrants prior to the event.
